Mark and the e-Gull at Arlington Fly-In

Post by blaswichk »

Oh boy! Mark's done it again!!
He brought the e-Gull with the 40KW Zero electric motor and it just rocks. I flew behind him in my 503 powered Gull 2000, and he just kicked my butt on climb out. To get the deck angle he was climbing at, I had to pull the nose up to 60 mph, and he was walking away from me climbing at 70 mph. And it is so quiet, as he has a Rotax 'B' gearbox on it running at much lower rpm with a fat prop. His plane was one of the star's of the fly-in, with only the Just Aircraft plane called Hee Haw III that was extremely radical in climb, and landing and taxing with the tail wheel held high, being even close on performance.
When my money ship comes in, I'm going for the Zero package!!!

Any videos yet?

My eGull will have the same motor, but we are thinking of going with 2 or 3 smaller batteries (the 170 lbs 11kWh monster is just too tough to fit in and handle). Mine will have the motor further forward, for easier W&B, and will not need the lead ballast Mark had in the nose. We are also looking into replacing the gearbox with a belt drive (as used by Zero on their bikes), to save weight and eliminate gearbox noise. Should also save a few $. Less weight will increase climb even more.

Mark dropped my wing kit off on his way to Arlington, and I have an order of Oratex fabric on the way. I should be flying next summer.
