Fuel Gauge

Post by fgayford »

Now that I have been putting the hours on my 503 JT2 I have been paying careful attention to my E.I.S capacitance fuel level accuracy.
I don't know about you guys but, but mine is right on accurate.
I still fly with an eye on time. I have a ten gallon tank and can fly for 1 3/4 hours max.
leaving me about a 1/4 tank. (2 1/2 gallons.)

Fred,

Your fuel burn is about what mine is. I've made flights of 1 1/2 hours, and came back with about 1/4 of a tank ( 10 gallons). By the way, try to come out to our Arlington Fly-in in the first week of July. I will be parked with Mark, showing off my wheel pants and new stabilator tips that you gave me. I will be also posting my speed run results on the site with the wheelpants just installed. I'm also searching for faster 503's, other than the European ultralights that can get away with retractible land gear. Good news about your fuel gage, maybe I will buy the sensor for my EIS and use it, otherwise my wristwatch and on-panel clock are just fine, as my butt is tired after 1 1/2 hours anyways.

Hi Kess
Wish I could come to Arlington but that is like half way around the world to me. I am in ontario Canada near Toronto.
Make sure you post a lot of pictures for us all.
Glad to hear you could use the stabilator tips. Did they just slip on fine? On my plane they slipped on with a bit of friction. Depends on the consistance of the builder I guess. If they fit yours they should fit everyones.
When I went 1 3/4 hours I still had a 1/4 tank left but I was doing some slower ploding along.
I should have mentioned about my gage. When I fill it up to the full level it reads 99 percent on the E.I.S. but at a 1/2 tank it reads 30 percent left. Which really is 1/2 tank remaining. I ignore the number and have written down on my panel that 30 means 1/2 tank or 5 gallons left. ( and yes I did calibrate it according to directions)
I also recorded that a 10 reading on the guage really means 1/4 tank or 2 1/2 gallons remaining.
Yes it would be nice to have the numbers align with the quantities but.
when that guage reads 30 it is always at a 1/2 tank and when it reads 10 it is always at 1/4 tank.
I can live with that and am trusting it more and more, but as a back up I still have a watch stuck to my dash with velcro that I set to 12:00 the moment I start my engine.

Cool, my on dash clock is also an analog ladies watch from Walmart that I cut off the mounting ears for the band, and also velcroed it to the panel. And yes, the stabilator tips just slide on like they were factory made. I haven't fastened them yet as I've been waiting to try and paint everything at the same time, and yes, I will post the completed plane with the pieces in place.

Now that is funny.
I thought I was a bit finatical when I had to hack saw and file the ears off my cheapo watch because it looked so bush league on my dash. and here you did the same. Perhaps great minds think alike after all.

I am still working on the tailstand. I weighed the boom in 3 places . At the doubler below the prop the weight was aprox 30 lbs .at the point just below the virtical stabilizer it was about 17 lbs. My thinking now is to make a pinch collar around the doubler below the prop therefore the Cg won't be affected much. The arm won't be as long. and it would be connected to the strongest part of the boom tube. I don't think I would even have to drill holes in it. Perhaps friction alone would be enough. It could shift if an exreme sideway load was applied.
Just thinking out loud. Anyone is welcome to give me their thoughts on this.

Fred,
I think theat you have a great idea. If you park the plane into the wind, you would not have side loads, and if the wind is howling, your not going to even park it. Good luck.
