Let's go somewhere else, to the small towns that are nearby. i have to
spread [the Good News] in them also. This is why i have come. Mark 1:39

point taken Sir, i will study more and improve on the DQs instead of
thinking out aloud.

Thanks Mark,
I've been an EV fan, even before ultralights in the 80's. I spend many years in power supply design with Xerox and IT&T, before I moved away from LA to start a gift and novelty shop with my brother in 1972. I would have built my electric car using and old VW for suspension and running gear, with a fiberglass body, but I never had the money for the right controller and deep cycle batteries. And then in 1984, I got hooked on ultralights and the pleasures of flight. Waaaaaaay more fun than motorcycles and dunebuggies of the 70's and early 80's. An now, with the prospect of electric flight, I'm just facinated, and as soon as I can find money or very low cost equiment, I want to do a super E-Gull. Thanks for the reminder of the other EAA.

Hi Kess
I also was in to electric cars in the mid seventies. I built a hybrid
Datsun, and also a little Sczuki pickup that was pure electric. I have a La Car
that has 45,000 electric miles on it that was electrified 20 years ago.
with led acid battery's it will do 70 mi at 55 mph and top 80 on the freeway.
I now have LiPo battery's, one of the airplane packs, and it will go 55
miles, on only 100 lb worth of battery's, the Lead acid battery's that gave
the 70 mi range weighed 1,100# so the car drives so much better now.
I have a 1972 fiat 850 spider that is destined to be the next generation
eCar.
Happy Flying
Mark

Oh I like the electrified Spider idea. For the weight of the engine/transmission, and the fuel tank with day 20 gallons, (120lbs), you could get some decent range. I'm sure that the gasoline engine/tranny must weight about 650lbs, and the electric motor/controller maybe 65lbs. That leaves a fair bit of weight difference for batteries. I have a Datsun 260Z in my barn that hasn't been driven in about 12 years, and was to be a candidate for a Prius conversion. Tom Hanks has a Scion shoebox car like my that is electrified. He call's it his e-Box. Whoohoo, more fun ahead eh??

Hi Mark
Thats incredible.55 miles with 100# pack.
What recycle life do they have. (how many deep cycle chargings could they take until they are shot?)
I like Kess come from a past of motorcycles and VW dunebuggies and I still have them.
Its an interesting profile among the flyers at our club.
Most come from a past of parachuting, scuba diving, hang gliding, motorcycling, dune buggying, and just plain tinkerers. With vertually no interest in the mindless team sports. I would rather watch paint dry than a playoff hockey game. Some Canadian am I, Eh!
So as you talk about electrics I am way too interested and attracted to it. It is exciting to think of making a electric conversion.
A flyer near me made this wild electric motorcycle that just about peels the tires off to 6o mph.

Hi Fred
Electric power is the way we all will be powered in the near future. As in
surfing it is not as fun to be on the back side of the wave.
The LiPo type of battery's are rated at 300 cycles at 100% DOD or depth of
discharge. The normal run profile is 60% this would give about 800 cycles
or more.
The LiFeP04 chemistry is in the 1500 to 3000 range. But weighs almost twice
as much and makes it not suitable for airplanes but wonderful for car and
other applications.
I buy my battery's from a hobby shop in China _www.hobbyking.com_
(http://www.hobbyking.com) , Best price by far.
Happy Flying

Hi Mark

The folding bike electric motor is awesome. Is your German friend's
youtube id this? http://www.youtube.com/user/forschungsbuero He's
awesome too. an eGull landing video like the Odyssey in those videos
would be awesome too

Will the motor be available in the Odyssey as well? Will the Odyssey
kit get lighter, with a simpler engine mount, less vibration, without
the backwall upholstery, etc? Wonder how common are the 240VAC, 40A
outlets in airfields, camp sites. For me, there's a lot to study in
the months ahead, electrical 101 again too with multiple phases,
heating, efficiencies, the symbol soup, controller/charger programming
- but simplistickly, 115.3# of battery, 20#? motor, 4.5# KD72401?, 25#
NG5 72-100? = 1:30? flight, 1:15? to charge in a 360#? basic eOdyssey?

Thanks
Rahul

Hi Mark

The spider will make awesomely sweeet eCar. the ease of reuse with
batteries and the charger is quite an icing on the cake. How long does
it take to convert? there's a 1984 delorean that i'd just love to
electrify one of these years, she sits in the museum of a little town
in the winters, but i'll have to convince my Aunt and get over her
screams first. until then, maybe not the folding bike but this sure
would fit in anywhere just fine i guess - http://www.microscooter.org.uk/micro-sc ... -p-53.html
