is it allowable to fly normally on backup instruments?
the scenario is like flying with a small SAM standby attitude module (flysam.com) on top of a flight panel and an iPad pro EFB that hides the good old primary analog instrument bank completely for most of a flight duration, detachable. guess the real question is, the sense of an instrument as a backup has no bearing on it's flight worthiness, just a redundant arrangement of two good quality instruments; wonder if the same perception holds in flight regulations

Re: wrt primary & backup flight instruments
Most of us LSA pilots fly when the birds do, no night flying trips, just have lights for dusk flights and being highly visible. No flights in crappy weather either. For that we fly in much bigger airplanes with a highly experienced driver in the front. With respect to back-up instruments, I suspect that they are just that, enough back-up to get you down safely.

Re: wrt primary & backup flight instruments
ought to have checked the price of this unit first. as a learning method for the aviation concepts and acronyms, some years ago, had thought up something with a similar form factor. then i went quiet on it, with the RTCA standards documents, test and certification costs looking big for an individual and something to try after some years of flying first. would like your two cents comments on this rough thought attached below..
still like the idea of a small attitude, big map, and a location module which combines GPS, SAR (personal locator beacon) and ADS-B as a small unit behind the scenes. yet to exist for a low cost, but i like the newer ADS-B/iPad app units which look pretty low cost in three digits now
