static port?

Post by mkoxxy »

There is a discussion on the Kolb forum about how to tune a static port for
correct airspeed indication. I'm sure this topic has come up here, too, but
I'm too lazy to search the archive. So, where should the static port go on
a Gull2000? Aft of the widest part of the fuselage, right?

Hi
The procedure that is often used to certify an airplane static system is to drag a hose that is 200 feet long with a plug in the end and a small hole about .040 drilled in the side of the tube about 6 in ahead of the end of the tube. The forward end of the tube is connected to the static port on the asi this becomes the control that you will use to compare your experimental locations for static ports to. I would try 2 static ports. One on each side of the fuselage at the belt line elevation and just ahead of the forward windshield down tubes. If you plug your asi into the control tube you will get an true static pressure reading, than you can unplug from the control wile setting the plane to fly trimmed hands off to maintain the desired angle of attack that generates the desired airspeed. Than plug your asi in to the position you want to test. If they read the same, pinch your self cause your dreaming. But what we are really after is to get closer to perfection. It's a wast of time and money to try to be perfect. Remember, the goal is to fly and enjoy the sky and a cupple miles per hr of error doesn't prevent us from enjoying the sky.

And me being a speed merchant desires to have more accuracy too. I was noticing an old Cougar home-built in a friends hangar and observed that it’s static port had 3 openings from front to back of the plane and all connected together. I’m going to do the same, as I have a static port on each side and one in the front right at the pitot tube. We shall see!
