single seat gull speeds
I know my JT2 has plenty of power to easily cruise in the triple digitswith it's 80hp. My previous single seat was a draggy Challenger 1 and could hit 90mph after I recovered the wings with stits fabric .It was powered by a 447 and was a long wing. It is nice to know that Mark's clean single seat ultralight can cruise in the triple digits with ease.( when nobody is looking and away from the airport ) That is what makes these planes so appealing is the fact that you are just giving up one seat which in my case is empty 99% of the time, but your escaping the growing burden of increasing rules ,burdens, expenses of regulated flight. Of Course controlled air space, flight rules and TFR's will always still be there. But we fly just for the freedom it offers, the summer fly in/cook outsand the camaraderie of like minded souls I look forward to my next plane as being in the ultralight catagoryand being another Earthstar. My 2 cents worth Carl with a JT2

Re: single seat gull speeds
And the Ultralight category is suggestive. Even though my E-LSA Gull 2000 is about 200 lbs heavier that a true ultralight and it’s speeds much faster, I still get called an ultralight when I’m around GA airplanes. I was in the pattern sitting at 100 mph downwind, and I heard a radio call from a Cessna behind me also on downwind telling traffic that he was following an ultralight. I replied back that I was a light sport plane that looks like an ultralight, but keeps up with Cessna’s. The radio went quiet.

Re: single seat gull speeds
These posts are right on the mark. I have had the same experiences with my single seat J model that in my mind meets the "spirit" of the law perfectly. What a wonderful airplane!

Re: single seat gull speeds
I just did something similar at Corona Airport last week in my JT2

The best bang for the buck and then some! I fly a gull 2000 "ultralight" it's 25' wing with 55 hp fuel injected Hirth. 2gph At
80 / 85. On push the throttle and see 120! 10 gal on board, you can go places. Awesome flying machine.

Re: single seat gull speeds
Mike what hirth are you flying with? It sounds like you are happy with it. I am not too familiar hirths except that I heard they had some problems with early models. With Rotax abandoning the 2 stroke market we all need to look for other options. Is the fuel injection worth the money? It sounds like it saves fuel compared to my 503.

Re: single seat gull speeds
Up here in the Northwest, Hirth’s don’t seem to last as long as 503’s. We had one blow up last year when the owner was making his last flight to deliver it to a new owner. It was on a Hornet, (a Challenger look-a-like). After a new crankshaft, the plane was ready for it’s new owner. For 2-strokes, the 503 is the best out there, especially when fitted to an efficient airframe such as the Gull’s.

Re: single seat gull speeds
The Hirth on my plane is the 3202 fuel injected. So far the only problems have been a cooling fan belt, and the prior owner killed the fuel pump circuit in the computer by not using a relay.
I have flown many hours on several Hirth engines. On one very early
Hirth 50 hp it powered an enclosed gyro for more than 300 hrs.
That engine run very hard every flight! No problems.
I know Hirth has a very bad reputation, but like so many things
Sometimes it's poor installation or operator error
One more thing to add,I installed a Hirth clutch on my 3202 it only
Lasted 30/40 hours. (I was very careful with the clutch) total
POS,bad design! And I don't believe it was designed for the torque curve of the 3202. I did however install a (rice king) clutch it's great
100+ hrs and shows no wear!
At this time I think Hirth is a very good engine.
I also run blue max oil at 80:1. Plugs are scary clean!
