The New Guy

Post by Don »

Hi, I knew there had to be a Thundergull group somewhere and I am
looking forward to getting to know y'all. I see Ron Carroll is on
here and hasn't had a chance to tell you that I bought his plane
about three weeks ago and on Memorial Day on my way back from
Northern Idaho stopped by Independance hoping the weather would be
cooperating with me to fly the J home. It was a great to take in the
Memorial day flyin at Independance and see all of the Noon Patrol
Neiuports all lined up. I had an absolutely fantastic flight back to
my home base in Shady Cove OR (OG31). I am very happy to be the new
owner of Ron's JGull, it flies really sweet!!! Last night after
work I just had to take a twilight flight down the Rogue River and
cruise the valley a little. The air was almost like glass and I had
a chance to do some slow flight and stalls...I love this plane!!!
Sorry Ron I think your gonna really miss it. Does anyone on this
list live in southern Oregon or Northern California?

Howdy Liteflyer,

Even though I'm on the right coast totally opposite from where you
are (the sunshine state), I'd like to welcome you aboard. I have the
Gull 2000 (single seat wide body version) and I love the plane as
well.

Hi Jim, Glad to meet you. I will probably go through a period of
asking questions about gulls. One of the things I noticed about my
new (to me) gull is that my legs are definately longer than Ron's
were. Do you have any idea what might be the best way to extend my
leg room a little? My knees are definately bent more than I am used
to and my shins clear the dash by about 3/8 of an inch. I also have
a very nice Flighstar which I am putting up for sale. If you know
anyone who might be interested in a really nicely equipped and well
taken care of UL the price is right.

Like Ron I am space limited and will probably regret selling it, but
the gull is sure fun to fly!!!

I have an adjustable seat in mine. Have two rails with notches about
an inch apart and I move the seat up and back. I can adjust between
6-8 inches. It works pretty well, especially since I have a single
seat and it allows me to work space a little for any extra stuff I
carry along when I am X-country-ing it.

Have to second that - Mine is pretty nimble and easy on the controls

Is that something that now comes stock in the 2K or is it something
you added? If stock I wonder if it can me modded into mine? Got any
drawings?

Don, I couldn't be any happier when I
hear how much you are enjoying the Gull.
You can't say I didn't warn you though, can you?

As for being a bit regretful about no longer
having it, all I can say is that flying this Kitfox
is like driving a Mac truck. Things should improve
as soon as my arms get stronger, and my temper cools
off a bit. I'll never be able to afford to own one again.

I doubt you will EVER hear anything negative about that plane.

Again, I'm glad to hear your smile!

Ron

PS - Hi Jim, still bragging about that darned old 2K, eh? <g>

I don't have a drawing - and there isn't one in my manual. Basically
just drill some more slots in the bottom surface of your seat rail.
The manual says to do it in 1.5" increments. If you do this make
sure you do both front and back.

I think you can also get it from Mark Beierle at Earthstar as well.
It wouldn't hurt to give him a call (805-438-5235) - He's on your
side of the continent.

And for Ron - Glad to see your still around - Just don't seem right
to trade in a Gull for a Kitfox. Hope it works out for you though.
And your right - I do like that Gull 2K, so just can't be anything
but happy about it.

Don,

Congratulations. You've got a great plane there. I have a J2 with a 503DCDI
and it's a sweet flyer. I like to call it the porsche of ultralights... :-)
You should fly it down here to the Texoma fly-in in Texas with Arty and
Randy next year...Although, I have to admit that I'm a little jealous when
other gulls show up to take my lime light... :-)
