Aloha,

what do the four knobs below the canopy front on this F-16C do? There is also an small air brake kind of device right before the canopy? wonder they are static or can hide into the fuselage at higher speeds

i rember Mark stating he has test flown the Gull through light rain, wondering how the raindrops behave on Gull/Odyssey windshields

sudden change in weather is par for course; i am yet to learn the feel of predicting fog or mist, especially the kind when it says here when the difference in air temp and dew point is 5°F (3°C), or less. thought dew point itself was variable as a function of couple other things.. would love to hear of the practical sense of these things as the super senior gull pilots developed and fine tuned their senses over decades

Hi
The air brake is dynamic and can be deployed
At speed but I don't know it's maximum operating
Speed. I have flown the Gulls in extremely heavy rain.
So heavy that I could not see out of the front windw.
My only ground reference was strait down.
I couldn't hear the engine either.
I don't venture in to those conditions on per pose
Any more.
Happy Flying
Mark

I’ve flown in the rain, and it shows where your leaks are. My hangar partner hates the rain with his Titan Tornado, as the rain slips in though the hinge gaps on the door which is pivoted right in front center rather than to one side as in the Gulls, and it hits him right in the nose. The last rain I was in showed a small leak at the top of the windshield which showed me where to caulk. As far as rain on the windshield, no problem in flight, and especially if waxed and slides right off. Light rain and taxiing seems to be the toughest part. Hey, we live in rain country here in the Northwest (part of U.S.A.).

Hi tell your Titan busy to
Use some electrical tape on the hinge.
That's what I do wen I fly to places fewer they have rain.

Hi sorry I meant Titan Buddy.

Thanks Mark, he’s tried that. Because of a large swing in the door to get in, the tape get’s unstuck quickly. He’s working on a Lexan cover to try and close up. For us, not as big deal as our hinge is on the side. My raindrops on the forehead were from some missing caulk at the windshield brow, which went away with recaulk.

Kess..
What are your recommended products and process for cleaning and waxing the Lexan windshield?
My A&P said that Pledge was a good choice. What is your approach?

I used blue painters tape on my door hinges. I don't fly in rainy conditions much, so I don't have much direct experience with it.
It did hold up well, was flexible and easy to remove when needing refresh.

Oh Cool, Sir; heavy rains, will ground plane at a healthy distance

maybe am just imagining it, but the photo seems to say so much more.. It looks like a newer redesigned version with aerodynamic enhancements from major CFD flow simulations; air brakes i seen on a sukhoi, those are above the fuselage, behind the canopy, 10x larger with a big hydraulic piston to push it up, along with drag chute in the back
(a) this cap shaped one seems to be more like a wiper less windshield wiper system, no more insect splats or streaks of raindrops aggregating or something, maybe it create a turbulent air bubble above and just ahead of the canopy, something that could even deflect any pebbles or debris while on the ground at the angles where the canopy could take a direct hit, at other angles the pebble or hail would just glance off; (b) the extra large fairing around the canopy seems to be a way to reduce all the airflow noise and turbulent air getting inside; (c) still don't get what the knobs do; (d) the rudder seems to be unusually thin, while being heavily reinforced at the base where the air flow has already long gone turblent, maybe that reduces drag appreciably in a rear jet engine, rather than midship prop like the Gulls..
