We don’t put lights on the tail, even the FAA allows the white lights in the aft of the
Wing tips to be the tail light.

Mark confirmed my gut feeling... to not mount it to the tail. Just not enough room in the tail boom to do so.

I like your idea Kess, and that's probably what I'll do. Thanks for the detail.

Now to decide top or bottom. I'm thinking bottom for best ground vis.

On the bench, the Avio lights look great. The strobe function on the wing lights are really bright, so I don't doubt they'll work nicely for providing most of the visibility. They are pretty small and light, so the wiring will be most of the weight.

Thanks, Joel. Yes, for ground visibility, the belly strobe is important.
But often, I find myself flying low, usually lower than "normal" traffic,
and aircraft are difficult to make out from above, against the ground
clutter, so a top strobe would appear to be at least as important. Most
critical is being seen by pilots at about your altitude, for which wing tip
strobes are probably best.
I can find AvioLights only factory-direct. $190 per light, plus $50
shipping, no VAT/sales tax in Oregon. Is that what you paid for yours?

I decided not to put the tail lite on because, yes rear facing white lites on the wing position lights is a good thing. Less wire, no plastic pipe, no GA type rear light converted to LED, as all that is greatly affected by the tail arm moment. I also am about done with the Kunzelman strobe, just one on the belly. Just not bright enough at a distance, and our airport is getting busier now that Paine Field, Everett is getting 40 airline flights a day starting next month, all their traffic has just 1 runway, and a whole row of hangars have gone away to make room for the new terminal. At least I don’t have to drive to Sea-Tac to fly away in a big tube. Could even fly the Gull there and park close to the terminal for a flight, how cool is that?

One last thing, my new hangar commuter thing is an ebike, a 1000 watt mini-bike. All those watts look big, but 746 of them make up 1 horsepower, 1000 of them is about 1.25hp. Even with the extra big fat tire for the dirt it will burn the tire when cranked up. 17mph is it’s top speed with as full battery (36v-15ah), but it get’s there in about a second and half. Hang-on or it will dump you on your butt! My hangar partner has a small Segway and is proud of it and said I can beat that thing easily. Ha! My extra large friend got on mine, and my hangar partner about the same big weight got on his Segway and we waved them off. The little scoot just zoomed-zoomed away in a flash. Poor Segway never had a chance. I LOVE electric motors so much I stopped at the closest Zero dealer in Seattle that also sell Triumphs, really nice big bikes now, aircooled fins and water cooled heads and nice lines. Back to the Zero, I picked the biggest motor, 70hp and the 14.4KW battery’s, controller and small battery charger and they are going to quote me parts prices. Probably as much as a whole new one, as there are no used ones here. The closest was in California, Irvine and somewhere else I forgot. There is one at the wrecked car storage lot here near the airport and my friend has been trying to get for a year an a half and they won’t sell it. Something haywire about title.

Avio lights are very expensive, too much for me. I will get some high-power red leds and make my own, and also high-power white LED’s and a simple flasher. Already converted the bulbs (26w each) on the wing tips to LED. They are clear when off, but red and green when powered up. I also found a 3” off-road light for my other wingtip landing light. Mo phun this winter!

Kess, that Zero looks really cool. I've always wanted to "connect" to a commercial flight from my own plane!

I've been considering building a light, and found this 180 deg lens:
http://www.carclo-optics.com/optic-1062 ... z-es-white http://www.carclo-optics.com/optic-1062 ... z-es-white
This lens coupled with a very bright LED on a "star" board would make for a simple and effective light. I'll probably do something like that for a belly light. I'll make a post when I get around to it.

The Avio lights are the lest expensive I was able to find while still having a good amount of light output.

I'm very interested in wing tip landing light...how did you do that? If you have pictures, I would be very interested. I have no landing lights anywhere.

Thanks

Here’s the pictures, couldn’t find the build pictures, too many files on different devices but I included Don and me at Arlington Fly-In last year I think. next to his JT-2 with just the front seat. The rear is his large baggage area and he get’s to haul the stuff when we go out.

Now I hate Yahoo as much as Facebook. Dumb sh-ts can’t remember my account number and password, so I sign up to re-apply and use the same one, but that didn’t work. To view your pictures the click took me to Yahoo account sign-in, and they boogered it up and I still can’t view them. This is all new. If Yahoo is secretly watching all of our mail content then screw ‘em, I’m done except for our site and I haven’t gone to or home page in months, that’s what e-mail is for. Sorry for the rant!
