dust devils
A few days ago I was washing my wing outside and a dust devil came up out of no where.I held onto the wing and it the dust devil spun me around clinging to that wing . I was lucky I was there.
I have a Gull 2000 with a 20 ft wing and 503 Rotax. I called IVO prop to order a new prop and they said I needed the medium prop, not the ultralight prop. He said the ultralight prop on the 503 with a "C" gear Box and 3to 1 ratio has had the blades move in the past. I am pretty sure I have seen the smaller ultralight prop on Gull 2000s but not sure where. So am at a loss as to what to do.I have a warp drive 3 blade prop but wanted a IVO prop for the quick adjusting of the pitch..
Is there another brand prop I should consider????
I posted a few new photos of my latest Gull. It has Black Max hydraulic brakes. I guess I will leave them installed since I don't have the parts to go back to mechanical brakes..eventually I will get one of them flying, and pretty soon I think.

Re: dust devils
That's interesting. The Medium Ivoprop is much beefier than the ultralight
model and I think more reliable. The mechanicals are higher quality.
But...its really heavy and I'd wonder if the gearbox can handle all that
weight.
Other than that, and cost of course, it is more expensive, I'd have no
problem using that prop.

Re: dust devils
IVO Prop recommended the 2 blade medium prop. They said it has wider blades and is a more efficient design.
I was just wondering what other are using for propeller on a 503...

Re: dust devils
I am using the ultra light 3 blade Ivo with inflight adjustment. My friend is using the same without the inflight. From what I have read about props Ivo is probably right that the medium with 2 blades is better. It does cost quite a bit more though. I have heard good things about the Kiev Prop. A guy running a 912 that I fly with likes his.

Re: dust devils
Hi, What gear box are you using? I have a 503 with DCDI and a “C” gearbox, 3 to 1 ratio, and IVO says don’t use the ultralight prop on that combination. Might be OK on a “B” box with the 2.58 to1 ratio…..
Just trying to figure it all out… IVO said they have seen some of the blades move back and forth even with the proper torque, in. lbs on the bolts…that is why they say to put stainless tape between the blades so if the blades do move, you might catch it on preflight.
One guy I talked to has a 503 with a “C” box and 3 to 1 ratio and he has knurled plates and the three blade ultralight prop and he says he has had not problem with it and he checks the torque each year….

Re: dust devils
I have the 2.58 b box but my friend is using the c with 3 to l and has had no problems. For safety I always use longer prop bolts with lock nuts.

Re: dust devils
The prop plates I have are NOT knurled. I have talked to two people who use the IVO ultralight prop, 3 blade and they bot have the knurled plates that help keep the blade root from moving. Neither have had any issues but check the prop before every flight.

Re: dust devils
Hi Mark
While other aircraft have been having problems with 3 to 1 gear box and ultralight ivo props. We use them as the preferred setup on 503 powered gulls.
I have thousands of hrs flying this combo.
I think some of the reasons it works better for us is because we would take the intake and exhaust manifolds off and trim the gaskets to smooth the airflow!
This makes the engine more powerful and a lot smoother.
