Wheel Pants Installed

Post by blaswichk »

Hi Guy,

I just posted pictures of my wheel pants installed that I bought from Aircraft Spruce. A lot of fitting and farting, but finally done. I also posted a picture of a back view showing all of my upgrades, wing root closure, engine cowl, spinner, and wheel pants. I call it Gull Slickery, and the Titan guys could learn from us, 50hp = 80hp in a clean airframe.

Lookin Good Kess. Slippery is always better...LOL Is that Snoopy
in the seat?

If my home strip was paved I would consider pants but my strip and some of the ones I visit are rough so they would not take the abuse.

I am still playing with my engine bay gap fill pieces trying to figure out how I want the top of them to be so there is room to work on the engine.

I installed an oil injection system but it has been raining alot so I have not flown with it yet.

Looked at the pictures . Very very nice looking.
Is your spinner mounted?

Yes it is Fred. I need to take it off and detail it, but I've been flying with it for a couple of months, and so far, so good. When I pull out to the run-up area with the other experimentals, I feel that my plane looks faster now, even though it might not do a whole lot. Overall, the Gull looks pretty racy now, and with all the other fast experimentals at our airport, that's not a bad thing.

Yes, that is little Snoopy. He's my hangar guardian, and airplane mate. He has to sit it out when I fly. Maybe I could fabricate a little seat for him right over the fuel tank.
Oh, the gap pieces aren't so bad when you drop the flaps out of their detent to straight down. You walk right up so either side, and the gap filling is only 9 inches on each side. I made two false rib extensions, riveted to the rear spar, and skinned only the bottom. On the right side, I created a little storage compartment that can hold three bottle of 2-stroke oil. The left side I had to cut relief notches into the ribs to clear the exhaust, but it worked. You will like the improved flight characteristics. That mod gave me 7mph.

I have been flying with the gap fill pieces that I made since last year. (Photos in the thundergull site in C-IIKH) They are only the bottom pieces. On the exhaust side I turned the muffler so it is on top and attached it to the head bolts so I could clean up the underside. What would be the best for me is to rework the wye pipe so
it would bring the muffler up enough in the down position to clear the wing fill pieces.

I just looked at your wing gap fill in. You did it similar to mine, except I rounded the fillet piece to the fuselage for smoother airflow. On the muffler side, mine has the muffler fitted tightly with band clamps and brackets fastened to the engine. This makes the muffler protrude slightly below the bottom of the wing extension, so I cut out the skin close to the muffler, and still had room for the fillet piece. the tailpipe exits at the back, and I have a 90 degree elbow on it to keep the exhaust off the prop. All this slickering up does make the Gull fly faster.

I see your motor mount is built differently than mine. On mine
the plates that hold the motor to the fuselage are flat so my engine sits higher. The mounting plates stick straight out so I could not
round out that area without going alot lower. The previous owner said he bought the kit in 2000 but did not finish building it until 2005 so your mount must be the improved version.
