What are the different Earthstar models?
Hi, I am new to the group. What are the different earth star models? Im interested in the single or maybe 2 place with rotax 503 since I understand that engine. Just want to fly around. I have a wrecked Ridge Runner 3 I am putting back together and I hope to have it flying this summer. I live up near Coeur D Alene but hangar space is non existence, so I thought of moving to Lewiston to see if I can get a hangar there>???
How hard is it to remove the wing to transport a thundergull and how long of an enclosed trailer should I look for >>?? Thanks in advance.

Hi, there are 3 Earthstar planes here at Arlington

keeping up with small Cessna's.

Re: What are the different Earthstar models?
I noticed the horizontal stabilizer if very close to the ground and esp on rotation to takeoff and land. Had there ever been damage to the stabilizer from hitting objects on the ground or from gravel thrown my the main gear??? I guess the tail was placed low out of the pro blast but it is really close to the ground and it is a flying tail and I have always thought they were superior in flight but challenge ring in structural installation and maintenance. I know of two coming off airplanes in Alaskas, Cherokees 6 airplanes witht he same design.

Hi
What were the circumstances of the the failures on the Cherokees in Alaska?
No we haven't lost any horizontal stabilizers. Mostly miner damage but I fly on really rough ground.
Happy Flying,

Re: What are the different Earthstar models?
One airplane had not been annualed in several years. It was likley loose on the hinges. The aircraft broke up in flight but the tail was found several miles from the main wreckage.
The second plane was a rental from some guy in Australia, He left Prudue Bay and was IFR so who know but likely over load. I just know that the hinges are not far apart and it is absolutly a NO NO to pus or pull on the stablizer but sometime people who don’t know trying to help do.
I just noticed the stablizer if real close to the ground on rotation and could easily hit something on a rough field, ...
I like the desing of the plane , just the not the low to the ground stablizer.... I guess if yo are on on paved runway or a know smooth grass runway you will be OK.
Still I think the tail should be looked at closely each pre flight and post flight for damage....

Re: What are the different Earthstar models?
like the looks of the plane and the performance. Ive been flhying 38 years and worked for FAA flight standards 15 yrs so saw lots of accidents. sorta put a wet blanket on my flyig but I still think it is safe if don’t properly and pay attetntion to the small indicaiton that something might be wrong and fix it. I found one JT2 for sale in Oregon bot 8900 but it is a little too rough for me. Ill keep looking . I have a spare 503 enigne and a 12 hr since new 503 on the RR3 but all I want to do it just fly around and the JT 1 or 2 would fit my bill I think. I don’t have hangar so might have to tie down outside and or take the wind off and brign it home when not going to fly for a few weeks...That’s why I went for a the RR3,the wings fold back for tanslport...

Thanks
If you have seen my video you wold see me driving around were other planes won't go.
Any way it's only ne'er the ground for a moment at extreme attitude.

Re: What are the different Earthstar models?
I agreee and am not overly concerned however if I owned one Ikeep a close I on it during pre and post flight for rock damage...is all. I like the design....

And, there are not many other light aircraft with similar flight efficiency on such low power.

Re: What are the different Earthstar models?
I own a Gull 2000 and fly with two other Thundergulls and
three other guys with Titan Tornado's and have never had
issues with the stabilator. What you will see is the rear
of the stabilator moves away from the ground when rotating
at take off. It's only close to the ground with full
forward stick. Not to worry,, and these things fly very
well.
