Realistic fuel burn

Post by dickoreilly »

I've been flight planning 4 GPH for the Rotax 503. Is that realistic? So far I haven't been up more than 1.1 hours at a stretch. I'm certainly going to be ready for a stop every two hours or less if I go cross-country. I used to do 3-4 hr legs in Cherokees and Comanches, but I was younger.

The TG is the easiest plane I've ever flown, and the most fun. I put up a little photo album here and I post flight videos on my YouTube channel, ManyPerspectives.

David B has a 503 and he calculates 4.2 gal/hour.

Hi Dick
Nice seeing your pictures. I haven't had my JT2 that long so I am still working on my duration.
I also have a 503 rotax on a 10 gallon tank.
So far I have gone 1 1/2 hours with lots of fuel to spare (1/4or better). At that point I needed a bathroom break more than I need gas.So for just flying around thats enough. I also have an EIS capacitance gas guage. I calibrated it and it seems to work well. If I go cross country I think I will put another tank in the back seat with a transfer pump to top up the main tank. I have a friend with an Odyssey that finds this works fine for him. He also has a 503.

I'll agree to the 4 gallons per hour for the 503. My flights are short with 1 1/2 hours being the longest ones, and in that time, about 6 gallons is used. I'm sticking with my 503 until my money truck comes in, or it breaks. At an extra 8 gallons a month, even at $4 per gallon, is going to take me a long time to break even for going to a 4 stroke. And also, now that I have the 503 all cowled up, I would have to do that all over again.
