Radio update MGL V10
I installed my new red tail bent antenna about 4 inches back from the regular mounting spot. Also installed a really high quality coax cable.
I ran it up the door side of the front canopy. (to keep it away from other wires)
It did seem better. Experimenting I smoothered the microphone completely with my hand and boy did the noise in my head phones decrease a lot.
I went into preferences in the radio and turned the mic sensativity down which help lower the noise a bit when I uncovered the mic.
Of coarse when you go to a lower power setting things also improved.
Kess you talked about some kind of muff you put on the mic. I think that is something I need to try. Can you give us a description of what you did? Thanks
Fred

Re: Radio update MGL V10
Fred,
I'm using a Oregon Aero MicMuff from Spruce. It's a little leather jacket with a hole in front & back for the mic hole. It does a good job of cutting out a lot of ambient cockpit noise.

Re: Radio update MGL V10
It's a little leather boot that slips over the mike, with the back side covered up, and the front side at the mouth side open. If you also position the mike with muff right up against your lips, the transmissions are quite clear. It got it at the Arlington Fly-In years ago from Oregon Aero for 10 bucks I think. Check out their web site.

Re: Radio update MGL V10
Hi Kess
I bought one of those muffs from aircraft spruce and gave it a try tonight. This one had a foam piece that went on and then the leather piece went over that. The instructions said that the foam forms a kind of sound chamber in the leather. There is a hole in the front and one in the back.
Results may vary but for me there was a dramatic improvement. I have the noise cancelling Telex 50D head sets.I am very happy with the MGL V10 radio as well.
I modified my db meter and took it up for a test as well. I have a 6 foot extention for the mic and just aimed it in different directions to see what would happen. I don't know what is going on yet for I had strange results. The noisiest direction was the front wind screen and dash also the floor in front of the pilots seat. When I aimed it at the side windows it was very much lower on the scale. I pointed it back as far as I could reach and the noise level was higher than the side screens but lower than the front of the plane.
I don't get it? Perhaps I am getting air movement from the wheel opening, But that wouldn't explain the dash and the front canopy.
Oh well I need to do more investigation. A foam wind sock for starters.
I will keep you posted.

Re: Radio update MGL V10
Hi Fred
Your results are not bogus. the windshield and belly skin act as a cone to
return the noise. sound technicians stop this kind of propagation by
putting an absorbent like foam in the point of the nose cone or a wall just ahead
of your feet that has carpet on it. we have done this with good results.
the other big thing is a back wall that has carpet on it and ceals the back
completely, no holes for the sound to get through.

nice catch, I would have never thought of this. I'll have see if I can get
some sound deadening foam up front. I would think the battery would absorb
some of this.

Re: Radio update MGL V10
And in my Gull 2000, I have the ballistic parachute case and battery to bounce sound, as well as the interior is more open than the older Gulls. Also in my plane the windows drone too. I can dampen some noise by leaning my arm against the right one. I also agree that a full carpet would reduce a lot of noise, as well as a padded rear cover. It always adds a few pounds, and we all hate that, but maybe there is a trade-off.

Re: Radio update MGL V10
Fred,
The Earthstar can be very quiet inside by adding sound proofing. To my odyssey I added very light weight .25 inch aluminum padding. This is spray glued to the back side, floor and top area in the back section of the fuselage. The padding has air pockets the same as bubble wrap. To separate the back compartment from the front I have 1 inch sound deadening panel wrapped in white vinyl (see my picture of this in the photo section under Gary's Odyssey). The panels wedge into position and hold with Velcro. The right side panel pulls out to allow access to the baggage area. Above my head on the wing I spray glued .25 inch foam fabric, and the floor has spray glued carpet. I know it's quiet because people who go up with me tell me so. The new buyer of the plane likes to go up with me without using the headsets, and we can talk to each other just fine, though I still like the headsets.
Mark is bringing me a new kit to build and I will be focused on making this one quiet so any information will be helpful to all.
