NOSE WHEEL

Post by Greg Johnson »

Jim--

Maybe I should my read my questions before I post them. Not soft wheel
landing but soft field landing. Is it possible to hold the front wheel
off the ground if landing in rough or sloppy conditions?
Not counting the trip down to Santa Margurita to see and fly the Gull,
the only thing that is holding me from ordering the Gull is the
ability of the Gull to handle adverse landing conditions. I realize
that the Gull is not a Super Cub but the front wheel concerns me.
Anyway--thanks to you and George for the response.

I have landed in some pretty rough fields and the nose wheel so far
has taken the rough stuff in stride. To hold the nose off the ground
you need to keep some power on. On takeoff it comes off fairly
quickly, but its not a taildragger either. I would not recommend it
if your going into fields with lots of gopher holes, but if it is
just rough terrain and not full of potholes per se it will do just
fine. I would probably consider the underneath clearance more of a
factor than the nosewheel. Depends on where you really plan to put
this thing down at - Is it really that rough - Just MHO.
