Photo Window?

Post by wsweidemann »

Has anyone fabricated a removable or temporarily opening Photo Window? By this, I mean a smallish section of the side of the windshield or side window about 8 by 10 inches or so, that can be opened for photos and then closed again in flight.

Thanks, Skot

Hi Skot
Why not just take the whole door off? I asked Mark once how the Gulls fly with the doors off and he told me that even at 90 miles an hour you don't get a wind blast.
I flew with the door removed from my JT2 and it was fantastic.
The plane is so stream lined that the slip stream just continues past the door opening.

Fred,

I know the door comes off, I'm interested in a temporarily removeable
section so I can shoot through clear air and close it up again for the rest of
the trip. Up here it gets cold.

Skot,

I will take photo's of mine Saturday. The window came on my airplane, although I had to finish it. Basically the builder, (I'm the third owner), just made a 4" X 6" hole, and glued little plastic angles at the top and bottom edges, in about an eighth,, creating a slide guide. Then he used a piece of lexan, about an eighth bigger than the hole to slide back and forth. I put the knob and stop screw on. Works great, it's more at mouth level for yelling 'clear' when starting engine, but you could probably poke a camera through the hole, and steer with your feet when the pitch is trimmed for hands-off flying.

Skot,

I just uploaded the picture of my side window in Kess's Gull 2000 folder. It will be at the end, and you will have to go past all the others.

Thanks for the photo window post. It's evidence I am happy to see, so I know it's possible.
