Oil Change Rotax 503

Post by ukey4917 »

Oil Change on Rotax 503 DCDI oil injection on Gull 2000 shortwing: Following Mark’s view of Champion Oil, I was able to obtain a new supplyfrom the manufacturer: the older packaging (white) on the right and the new (black)on the left. (My best information is that this same oil has been used in my 503from early days.) I was without total confidence in the full compatibility ofthe two oils. I proceeded to drain out all of the old oil from the reservoir,(and flush with a portion of new oil) then remove the older supply line andfilter. Then the only oil remaining was that which was in the metering pumpitself. I installed a new mesh filter (Lockwood supplied) and new oil line(clamped with Oeitker) and then filled with fresh oil. There was some sort ofair lock in the line that I seemed to have removed by putting slight (humanlung pump) pressure on the reservoir contents and then similar with vacuum. Thetransparent mesh filter filled about 90% as seen in photo.. As far as I can tellthe new oil change worked as advertised. No extensive air time but nearly anhour of run time with air hops and one pattern flight with full throttle climbout. This follows the logic that any new oil and old oil should not be mixed atall; in other words I sought to run out all of the old oil (that which was inthe metering pump) and let the new oil follow it rather than risking the mixing.

Hi Gary
I am not sure that you need to be so carful about clearing out the old oil in the line since it is being fed through the oil line and pump and can not do much mixing with the old oil.
I am sure that wen ever the oil pump is opened that the gas should be premixed at 100 to 1 for at least 3 gallons, this gives the oil pump time to git the air out of the system.
What Gary did worked because he was carful pushing out the air. I would have also premixed the 100 to 1 in the gas to be safe.
Happy Flying
Mark

Mark, thanks for that reply. Yes, i wish I would have thought to have left the fuel in the tank low and then mix in a gallon with ratio mix for the whole of the remainder so that I would have covered the possibility of a hiatus in the flow of "new" oil. I have pretty much been belt-and-suspenders and sort of knew this but forgot to do it. (Once earlier I marked the oil reservoir (while running a mix directly in the gas tank) to verify that the oil was being delivered to the engine via the pump. This was when I took possession of the Gull.) At this writing I have no reason to think the pump is not working because the oil consumption has been regular but I have no way of otherwise knowing that all is well with the pump-meter. I will look at the small guage delivery lines from the pump-meter to the delivery ports to see that they are filled and no "air spaces" in them.
