Earthstar Folks,
This morning I experienced what I consider "flying machine discrimination" from my own wife. I am a staunch fan of the Earthstar Odyssey and have become obsessed with it's attributes. If you simply refer to the technical facts about this plane you should be impressed.
The Earthstar Odyssey:
-Two place capability
-Tricycle landing gear (I would expect almost impossible to ground loop, unlike a Luscombe, Cub, TCraft or Champ), with a good safety record
-Electric system with alternator, battery, engine starter & enough juice to power all the avionics and lights you can come up with (Most of the old factory LSA classics are hand start...with no electrics.)
-Superb visibility with no struts or engine in front (compared to most other factory built aircraft LSA qualified airplanes)
-Reliable and economical engine (4 stroke HKS with 2.5 GPH, which is an efficient modern engine)
-Reasonable speed for cross countrry (I expect much faster than a J3 Cub for instance)
-Affordable (used ready-made ones can be bought for about the same price as an older "classic" Light Sport qualified certified factory plane...yet with more features)
HOWEVER when I showed my wife of 30 years some photos of a nice Odyssey flying machine, she said "looks like an ultralight". On further conversation she said "it looks like something someone would fly who can't fly a real airplane". I was very disappointed in her attitude, especially since she has been around me for a good part of my (and her) life during which I have flown many different aircraft. She should know that all flying machines have capabilities of their own and are beautiful in each their own way. If she feels this way, I'm certain there are many others out there who have a similar attitude. An observation.
Regards,

Re: Odyssey Discrimination?
Well Skot thats a real delemma!
Just a suggestion. But if your wife ever gives you an ultimatium that its either me or the Odyssey, just tell her that you will really miss her!

Fred,
Yes, I know it's a real big problem. Not really, just annoying.

Re: Odyssey Discrimination?
Yeah, how amazing it is that because the engine is in the the back, and our planes have the tubular fuselage boom, other GA pilots often refer to them as ultralights also. I was in the pattern a couple of weeks ago, flying downwind at 100mph, and a Skylane, (Cessna 182) pilot announced that he was behind an ultralight. I promptly announced that my plane was not an ultralight, but was a faster and heavier experimental light sport airplane that can keep up with most Cessna's. The guy never said a word back, and the next thing I noticed was that he slid right in underneath me on short final. Sometimes, we just get no respect!

Re: Odyssey Discrimination?
Opposite issue for me. My wife loves the Odyssey. We've been going on trips the past few weeks, yesterday out to 29 Palms and back. Lunch in Yucca Valley. We're having a blast. - John

Re: Odyssey Discrimination?
Just tell her how much cheaper it is to fly and maintain an odyssey
compared to a "real airplane" and she will change her mind about it ;-)
Blade.
