Hangar on wheels

Post by zadwit »

I have been working on a hangar on wheels for several months between snow storms and such. IT started out as a 20 ft 4 place double axle snow machine trailer. I welded frames on 24" centers(overkill) and then sheeted the roof and sides with 28 ga zinc siding from HD. I added on a 5 foot beaver tail on the back and install a 3/4" plywood ramp. I made 2 light weight doors from square steel tubing. I put 3/8" plywood on the floor but probably did not need it as the floor is steel. I still need to install a sling on the wall to hold the wing and a rail down the center to keep the plane centered while pushing or winching it into the shed. Ill add some kind of LED light and lots of tie downs. It is 25 ft long, 100" wide inside and a 102" wide outside/ the walls are 8 ft tall and it is 10ft from floor to center of ceiling. One unintended consequence is the trailer is balanced on the rear wheels, not good for towing. So I will have to move the axles aft or carry some weight up front. ANyway Ill see how it tows. If nothing else, it will make a good shed. Ill try to post photos in the photo section.

Nice job on your hanger on wheels. I have often thought that this was a good idea. On the titanaircraft yahoo groups board a guy took it one step farther by making the top at the back open up and attaching boxs to the sides to enclose the wings so he can park his titan in it without taking the wing off. The side pieces come off and the wing can be stored inside for transport.

I made it way too strong with 40# per sq foot live load on roof, frames are 24" on center and I should have done 48" centers, it would have been a bit lighter... Also the diagonal braces from the wall to the ceiling are not necessary. That is 1/8" thick steel tubing, a small gusset would have been just fine and I might change one side to that so I can mount the wing on the wall, with the tail on the floor, it will all fit in just fine.
