Eco Motors has been developing a very interesting opposed piston opposed cylinder
engine that is light weight and fuel efficient. It is a 2 -cycle , electric boosted turbo-charged
design that is in it's 5 design generation .Bill Gates and Khosla Ventures are among the
American financial backers however Production is supposed to gear up this year in China
It can run on multi -fuels. With the diesel version it produces 120Hp with only 700cc displacement.
Hp to weight ratio is 1:1. Top rpm is 4,000.
Been following this promising design since 2008 . But just like the 3x and 5x battery , availability
is just a carrot stick away.

Re: EM motors : great potential in the ultralight /experimental catagory
wonder whats it's GPH; MPG as a comparative measure confuses me with thoughts about test car mass and terrain.
now a Volkswagen XL-1 diesel hybrid is rated at 261mpg, like two and a half times better, with major weight and drag refinements. but then it's power train itself is like 500lbs...
2 cents,
Rahul

And according to Wiki, the VW diesel hybrid combustion engine is 299 ccd and puts out eight horsepower. According to Mark, it takes 16+ just to keep a TGull in the air.

The web site is Eco motors The first engine was 40 hp .weight 39 pounds.
first application as a compact brief case sized generator
.torque is twice the hp in foot pounds.
Fuel burn is supposed to be better than a 40 hp TDI Diesel
Two cylinder, 4 pistons. ....watch the animation on the web site. ..

35kW from 800cc in XL-1; which was introduced a couple of years ago it seems
yet to appreciate the efficiency of a heavy fuel HCCI, the high pressure self ignition thing; looks like it needs a heavier cylinder to contain a heavier detonation, a heavier crankshaft to push the piston back which more work lost in compress ion, and then somehow it gets more efficient..

The hp required to maintain leval flight is related to operating weight and wing span, among other things.
The eGull 28 foot wing will maintain on 9 hp. The eGull with same size battery's, 11.4 kWh, with 20 foot wing at 16 hp.
