Alan, tell us more about the 10 gallon aluminum wing tank(s). I'm guessing that you have at least two, maybe four, to total 10 gallons, and they must be airfoil or wedge shaped, and how do you get to them? Do you have to unbond the wing to get to them, or is there an opening like on Cessna's?

Regarding Extra Fuel Tanks:
My input: I would opt for a heavier fuel tank that holds a lot more fuel (range & safety) as a good tradeoff for the extra weight of the tank plus fuel required. If let's say a 15 gallon tank or more were installed in an Odyssey you would simply lower the amount of weight you could carry in the second seat. I owned a C172 which had over a 5 hour range (plus reserve of an hour at cruise) and it was glorious! I was much more relaxed on my miscellaneous cross country flights. With long range tanks you essentially increase your overall average speed because you don't have to stop as often to get fuel. I usually plan for at least 30 minutes on the ground for any fuel stop. I would trade weight for range any day, especially when looking at some of the photos you guys post with lots of hills and mountains below.

I have some C-172 time too, and long range tanks can be a benefit if the back seats are empty. If you have some big butts back there, and the front seats full, your not going to be able to go that 5 hours, unless you have a 180hp upgrade. My time has been mixed with 145hp 0-300's, 150/160hp 0-320's, and the 180hp 0-360's, which is my favorite C-172 to fly. I'm of the same opinion as Mark, stay with the plastic tanks. They are cheap and strong, even in 15 gallon size.

I would be happy with a plastic 15 gallon tank, which would be 50% more
fuel. I'll be standing by to see if this is a present or future option for
