There were 8 planes ranging from the fastest to slowest, an RV9, Piper Cherokee, Avid Magnum, Taylorcraft, Kitfox, Me in my Gull 2000, Zenith 750 and a Genesis Slipstream. The Cherokee and the RV9 only landed on the smooth airstrips. The Lethbridge guys are very organized with a ground support vehicle that carried all the camping equipment and fuel. Some of the wives accompanied us on various legs and drove the support vehicle.
We all met at my buddies place 20 miles east of here (Medicine Hat). My buddy has a J1 and flew with us the next day but had to go home after that. The next day we flew 100 miles north to visit an old pilot and builder. He flies an RV6 he built, works in progress are a wag aero, and a biplane. We then went west about 100 miles to Hanna for the night.
The next day we went about 113 miles north (dodging some rain) to Wetaskiwin . A local pilot friend of the group greeted us with coffee, donuts and a BBQ supper. We also took in the Reynolds Museum free of charge...(Its good to know people with clout..lol). http://www.history.alberta.ca/reynolds/
The next day we were off to a little strip at Lindon about 95 miles south for lunch then on to Vulcan (Kirkcaldly) about another 88 miles for the night. Kirkcaldy is an old WW2 airstrip and we had to land here instead of Vulcan because they were crack filling the runway. A guy there is restoring one of the WW2 hangers. http://www.vulcanairbase.com/
The next day we flew back to Vulcan for breakfast (there is a restaurant 1/2 mile from the airstrip) then on to Cowley about 80 miles southwest. Cowley; Canada's Diamond mine http://www.soaring.ab.ca/cowley.html

Cowley is known for gliding but the season was over when we were there.
Our original destination was Sparwood BC but we had some newbys to mountain flying with us and Sparwood is over 1 mountain range. As it turned out the guy with the Avid had some problems with his tail wheel so by the time he got it repaired at Cowley we decided just to stay there as the winds were picking up in the mountains. We were aiming to go to Sparwood for breakfast the next day but the wind was forecast to pick up again so we just flew back to Vulcan for breakfast then about 70 miles south to J3 which is one of the Lethbridge airstrips to disperse. From there I flew the 92 miles back home.
All together I flew 822 miles in 5 days and had a blast. Great guys to fly with, no whinners in the bunch. Lots of laughing and joking on the ground and all business in the air.
Some of the nicest people are pilots, present company included....;-)

Re: Alberta Flying Adventure
Great fun, and a good account, Mike. That is the best...... a good bunch of folks flying their little airplanes together just for the joy. Thanks for the report.
