I have a prospective buyer for my Odyssey however I find that the airport he has intentions of keeping it at is under a 30 mile Mode C Veil. My understanding is that he must have a transponder to operate in this airspace. Are there exceptions?

Not a problem! Loophole, if aircraft does not have a certified electrical system it is exempt from mode C veil.
Are you selling because of HKS production shut down?
HKS is back in production.

Re: Airspace for Earthstar?
It depends. If the airport has a tower the buyer should talk to the controllers. If no tower, talk to airport manager.
My antique Interstate Cadet had no transponder when I based it at Whiteman (WHP) airport last year. WHP is a towered airport beneath the LAX class B and beneath the BUR class C. I did fly that way for awhile but it was uncomfortable. The Interstate is a certified aircraft with a Continental engine, so there was no restriction on flying over populated areas. It also had a radio. I soon had a transponder installed for my own comfort and convenience. It wasn't required but sure made flying easier.

Well...it apparently doesn't matter anyway. He got scared off by the possibility of no HKS parts. Too bad for me, especially since there apparently WILL be more HKS engines & parts produced.

Re: Airspace for Earthstar?
OMG! Whiteman airport! That airport brings back memories. In the early 60’s I lived only a mile or two from the airport, and I had a chance to take C-150 training right up to the check-ride for $600, but I had small kids and no extra cash. Then in the middle 60’s the National Guard unit I belonged to was changing out an engine on a M49A1 tank which was an air-cooled Continental V-12 of 1777 cubic inches, and we decided to test run it without the muffler pack to check for leaks. At the time, the end of a taxiway at Whiteman was used for a drag strip and the turn around to start was just feet from the tank on the other side of the fence. Well, when we lit off the big gas V-12, all kinds of smoke, flames, and noise erupted and the drag-strip came to a standstill as the kids were hanging on the fence yelling “We want that engine in a dragster!” A golden moment.

Sounds like great fun. Different world today. A good small airport in a very urban setting. Owned and operated by Los Angeles County and not threatened with extinction like Santa Monica Airport where I got my private in 1985.
