700T install.

Re: 700T install.
I have tried many props and even though the Ivo in flight adjustable changes the twist and not the whole blade pitch, it does, by far, give you, both, a lot of power for takeoff and much better cruise ( say, up to 10 mph safely and 20 mph but dangerously with a system freeze ) Fixed pitch props can only deliver either great takeoff power or great cruise speed, but not both
If you just care for either cruise or takeoff; then, by all means, choose a fixed pitch

Re: 700T install.
I'm nervous about the reliability. I had a ultralight version and had
nothing but problems. The thread was fragile but also motor moved in its
casing and that caused the wires to break every 10 or 20 hours.
For now, not for me. I'd rather have 90% full power 100 percent of the
time than 100% full power whenever the prop works.
Sounds like your experience is different.

Re: 700T install.
The ultralight version is reliable on a 50 hp 503. You had it on an 80 hp Hirth. My experience with in-flight adjustable (current, more robust model) was that it was hard to get just the right setting. I took it off and went back to ground-adjustable and was happy with that. Looking back, I think the perfect solution would be setting up the in-flight unit so that it was simply a two-position prop - max climb pitch and cruise pitch. Then you could toggle the switch four seconds either way and have it right. I think that would take an added washer and maybe even some machining of washers to get exactly the right dimension between coarse and fine. It was after trying to find a proper pitch in constant turbulence over the desert one spring day, without success, that caused me to remove it.

Also, since they twist the tip of the prop and therefore don't change the angle of attack throughout the blade they aren't as efficient. I figure a good fixed pitch will generally equal a IVO adjustable and be much more reliable.

Re: 700T install.
I had a UL IVO on my 65hp hirth. I had a medium ivo on my 85 hp, and it
was pretty reliable. The part that bothered me, and perhaps they have
fixed it, was the darn electric motor vibrating in its mount on the UL
version and having the wires break. That was just bad design.
Bill, I like your idea. That is sort of what I had set up.

Re: 700T install.
I ended up with a fixed pitch
It's pretty scary when you find that you have not enough power to extend your glide to the runway or go around

Re: 700T install.
Hi. I have an ifa Airmaster hub with Warp blades. It seems to me that if I entered the circuit and wasn't able to get it into fine pitch I would adjust my approach so that I didn't require any power - I don't think it would be a problem under normal circumstances.

Re: 700T install.
No problem unless you needed to do a go-around, get caught in wind-shear,
bad weather, or just plain didn't estimate your glide-path correctly.
Having some power in a landing is much better than no power in a landing
(done both, and even having idle power is a big advantage), but still
having a prop at full pitch while landing decreases your chance of success.
Hopefully it very rarely ever happens.

Re: 700T install.
Thanks, I am aware of that, being one who had one fail in coarse during take-off. Fortunately the runway was quite long and paved and I continued to climb out and when pushed over the speed built really quick. I converted back to ground adjust, and waited a year before sending the gear-box back to Ivo for a rebuild. When the rebuilt came back, I was amazed at how cheesy the gears are and the slop. One thing for sure, at annual time it will be re-greased.
