700T install.

Looks like I can move forward with installing a 700T (or perhaps E) on my
airplane (Thundergull JT2). I'm debating about putting the install on the
web (photos, brief text, maybe videos). Would any of you find this useful
and interesting? I'd love to get more people aware of Mark Beierle's
wonderful airplanes.

I'll be doing the install starting in mid December when school gets out.

You will like the inflight adjustable, it’s like a car transmission having an overdrive. Finer for climb, two taps of the switch for fast cruise. My hangar partner just installed the bigger Ivo on his 912 powered Titan, and we’re still getting the brushes bracket fabricated. Should be interesting.

Mark may have some ideas about how to fabricate the bushings. Several
years ago I bought some from him that had been designed by one of his
workers but I don't know if he is still making them.

Rather than being large and aluminum (both of which increase wear and
decrease reliability), Mark's bushings are small diameter (surface speed is
lower) and brass (less wear) and are designed to fit in the hollow center
found in many gearboxes, and with the existing IvoProp brushes. I still
have mine somewhere. I've kept it in case I ever am in the place where I
want a variable pitch prop again.

Doing this has a lot of advantages. I would NEVER use the existing IvoProp
bushing system and I'm amazed that after all these years IvoProp does not
have a brush/bushing setup like that I got from Mark (maybe IvoProp finally
has made one?).

When I first saw the Ivo brush set-up for the slip rings, I was not impressed. However with many flights and adjustments, it still seems to be working just fine. One thing that I did learn along the way was to NOT polish the slip rings and remove the carbon film, as that will accelerate the wear of the brushes. I still have a new spare set for the future. The biggest complaint I have with the Ivo set-up is the way the motor wire leads are attached, just squished between the insulator rings and the slip rings. The wire leads of the bigger Ivo had been squished in too far, flattening some of the wire insulation, which I thought might effect the prop torqueing, so when we installed it, I made sure that the insulation was NOT in the squishing area, just the bare wire ends.

You guys with the IVO variable pitch propellers just be very careful
The mechanism tends to fail pretty quickly and you MUST set it not too coarse (best for speed) as this setting, under failure, will not permit you to develop much power (engine bogs down) and you will have to land in gliding mode

The medium IVOs have a better screw thread (the correct square thread) but
still I don't consider them reliable enough. Also, since they twist the
tip of the prop and therefore don't change the angle of attack throughout
the blade they aren't as efficient. I figure a good fixed pitch will
generally equal a IVO adjustable and be much more reliable.
