Saturday's Flight

Well, yesterday gave me some new numbers to ponder. I flew a total
of 186 miles in 2.2 hrs. This averages out to 84.5 mph including
ground time. I used 6.2 gallons of fuel which averages to about 2.8
gph (and 30 mpg - one of my highest fuel usages this year).

Now this trip was pretty much flown at 100 mph indicated for
approximately 167 miles of the total trip at 5600+ rpm. Still not
too bad on the high end of the speed spectrum.

It seems over the past 10 months or so I have settled into about 1.8-
2.0 gph on the lower end (60-75 mph), and 2.8 or so on the higher end
(95-105). I usually like to fly in the 85-90 mph range and have
settled into about 2.4-2.6 gph there. Either way I can't complain
too much about the gas mileage. I now have about 110 hours on this
engine if anyone wants to compare what they are doing with the same
engine (HKS).

I still have a small oil leak (it's minute, but it still bothers me a
little although it doesn't affect performance at all). I think it is
seeping out of the threads where the bolts hold the gear box onto the
engine. I will let you know after I put some thread sealant/lock and
retorque them as to whether this theory is correct or not.

Hope all had some good flying days this weekend.

Great hearing about your experiences, but it
still makes the rest of us envious, and
feeling like we also need an HKS. If they
weren't so darned expensive compared to my 503.

I'd like to hear some similar reports from
anyone using this engine on a J-Model. With
my fixed pitch IVO I can only get 90 on the
top end. I have an in-flight adjustable hub
for it, but have hesitated to put it on, especially
since I'm hoping to register it in the new Sport category
(doesn't allow in-flight adjustable props).

Anyone on the list with a J-Model & an HKS engine,
please either submit to the list, or write me direct at:
