Baggage door J1

I'm thinking of adding a baggage door to my J1. I keep bumping the
control tube as I'm putting my baggage in over the seat. Does anyone
have one? Seems that it wouldn't be much different from a JT2 rear
door. Can anyone enlighten me?

I made a fiberglass baggage door and left rear panel for my J in
conjunction with a contoured fiberglass belly skin. It was formed with a
slight curve in it to help the air flow and to make it stiffer. It all
turned out pretty nice. Real handy to service the rear area where I fuel
it, keep the starter battery, and have a BRS softpack parachute installed.
The parachute is aimed for the door and would blow it out if fired.

My glassing skills aren't up for that. But it sounds very nice. I
guess I'll give it a try in aluminum tube. Got some at surplus
price. ($1.50 a lb.).

I hear you about servicing the rear area. I get a sore back just
remembering my rewiring job.
