Thats an amazing comparison. I had no idea how much the cost saving would be. My main interest in getting an HKS is safety and extra range. The trade value is also there if you wanted to sell in the future.
Thanks Alan

someone also listed 5 better priced 700es for sale recently, maybe the 700t
will lead to a quick inventory clearance. wonder HKS would ever answer for
an EFI in the 700e
2 cents,

Sometimes you just have to hate the internet. I just tried the greenskyadventures link, and it is broken. So I went to Google, and got all the greensky links including their home page, and nothing works. Maybe they're bogged down this morning.

This comparison is not fair at all
I have had several 582s on other aircraft and I now have an HKS on a Odyssey
1.- A 582 will last, if properly maintained 600 hours, with a mid life OH at
300 hours (206 hours for total life is not correct )
2.- A 582 will consume oil at a rate equal to 1/50th its fuel consumption (
Thats how you mix both if you cancel the oil pump) if you use the oil
injector system, the average will be around 1/80th
3.- If you really want to be fair, it is not right to talk just about
operating costs without including the amortization of the purchase price (
Purchase price divided by engine life in hours)
Do your own numbers

Right-on Jaime!!
Your absolutely right of purchase cost to be included here. I'm a big fan of the Jabiru 2200, because it gets about the same gph as the HKS, but at 12k+ big ones, my cheap old 503 looks attractive again. Also my buddy has to run av gas in his, which is about $5.75 a gallon here, compared to $3.25 for automobile premium, so the gas cost per mile is kind of a wash. The TBO is not a big deal for me either, because at 60-75 hours a year it will take me a while to wear out the 503 or 582 and justify big bucks for an upgrade. Hell, by then Mark will have our electric powerplant ready!!

I'm personally planning on waiting for an electric power plant. If the
rumors I'm hearing are true, batteries are within a few years of becoming
competitive (or more than competitive) with gasoline in energy/weight. If
this doesn't happen I will consider a 4-cycle HKS. 3 hours + reserve in the
air is all I need.
I'd fly with an electric motor over any engine, anytime. Reliability,
maintence cost, torque, noise, efficency all favor electric motors. The
thought of flying my airplane w/o the vibration and noise of an internal
combustion engine is very important to me. I also like the idea that an
electric motor will have the same power no mater what density altitude the
air is at. That will offset the advantage that gas burns and the aircraft
gets lighter as the flight goes on.
So if I had to choose between $22,000 to buy and install an 4-cycle five
years from now, or $22,000 for batteries and motor...batteries and motors.

Gas or electric, I think it is inevitable that gasoline prices will become
astronomical!
