Fuel Gages Revisited

I just recently came up with a fuel level indicator that is cheap and simple. I bought a wired type car back-up camera from Amazon(ebay), and tie wrapped the camera to a down tube facing the fuel tank, re-marked the fuel level lines with a sharpie, (backwards print), and mounted the monitor screen near the floor by my switch panel. I can literally “see” the real level of the fuel. Works great and I love it!

I just use a mirror mounted above the windshield.

A video camera to see the gas!
I wouldn't have seen that coming 20 years ago!

How much does engine vibration and aircraft motion affect the accuracy?
Many sensors have averaging features to deal with this.

There's nothing like being able to see your fuel level!
Now I want one. So here's some questions:
How far away did you have to mount it for focus?
Did you have to add a light to see the fuel?
How easy is it to see the fuel level?
Do you recommend the one you got?

Here is one with infrared lights. My gas tank is hidden in the dark so I'm
sure I need a light.

This one appears to also have the infrared leds too. I've not flown it at night, but at dusk it's still easy to read. The fuel tank is visible all the time, but directly behind me in the Gull 2000, and no way to turn around to see it, and I couldn't find a suitable mirror position. It shows 8 gallons down to 1, with the little red side bars top to bottom as I mounted the camera sideways. Car gas, at least 91 octane is a bit transparent, but still easy to see. Av gas would be much easier to see as it's blue tint. Don't remember the brand, just a 12-13 dollar unit from ebay.
