Hello;

Can anyone let me know if there is an Earthstar aircraft that is available?

Hello Chris

I’ve an Odyssey, with the 700T engine. Illness is forcing me to sell.

I’ve the plane hangared in Santa Ynez, CA.

Mark is intimately familiar with the plane, since I built it there, and he’s flown it many times.

The engine has about 50 hours on it, since I swapped in the 700T, and the plane about 100.

I can provide more details if you’re interested.

Hello Jim;

Thanks for your reply. I am interested in the Odyssey, but not familiar
with the 700T engine. Can you point me in the right direction?

What are you asking for it?

Hi Chris

The 700T is a modified 700 but mounted with a small turbo, increasing hp from 60 to 80. (I believe the turbo comes from a production motorcycle, but can’t tell you which, altho I’m sure its trackable.)

It also increases the aircraft ceiling because of the turbo, as well as flight efficiency - depending on altitude.

I asked Mark what he thought the ceiling would be with the turbo, so I could include it in the POH. He said 24,000’.

Wow, hard to believe, but lacking any better data, I included in the POH. Suffice it to say, whatever the increased ceiling is, it’s a big jump. Of course, I’ve never taken it to 24,000’ - as though that matters.

I’ve included the POH I prepared below. (I created this POH in Pages, so you may have to convert its format to be readable.)

As far as price is concerned, I’d love to get $30,000, but because of my cancer am open to whatever a “reasonable” offer might be.

Part of the pricing includes the instrumentation, described in the POH. It does not have auto-pilot installed, even though the Dynon can accommodate that feature, nor does it have ADS-B Out, required the first of next year in some airspaces.

Let me know what you think.

The 24,000 number was given to me by the motor designer. I have not taken it over 18,000 feet due to the continual control zone.

You would need very warm clothes, plenty of time and lots of oxygen in
order to do that if fuel lasts that long
Expect lower and lower climb rates as you get higher than the critical
turbocharger altitude. Just the last 1,000 feet will take you about 8 or 9
minutes by definition of service ceiling.
You don't see many unpressurized turbocharged aircraft above 12,000 feet
asl, for that reason.
Those engines are great for keeping your full power up to critical
altitude. You gain about 2% higher speed for each 1,000 feet above the
altitude where you otherwise would have hit your cruising power, but you
lose a lot of time and distance climbing since you should do it at Vbrc, 70
mph IAS on the Odyssey. That is why turbocharged aircraft must fly for
several hours at the top altitude to make up for what they lose on
climbing. If you spend, say, 30 minutes to climb at 70mph to an altitude
where you gain, say, 10 mph (5,000 feet above your otherwise 65% or
75%power altitude whichever you normally do ) and your cruise speed is
90mph IAS you make it up after 60 minutes of cruise.
After those 60 minutes have past you gain, 10% of the rest of the cruising
time. Say 12 minutes if you fly an additional 2 hours for a total of 3
hours. You don't make much on the way down due to Vne restrictions and
aerodynamic drag considerations.
If you live in high altitude country or need to cross mountains, then
that's the wisest decision.

(offtopic) Jim, Get Well Soon. What’s the medical name of the illness? Thought of sharing a small draft to heal, may be useful reading. Am sure every Pilot has a file on tips to heal fast(er) and great links.

In case you are not familiar with these, we are talking about the HKS 700
(2-cyl, 4-stroke, Japanese).
