Hi Group,
I have decided to replace my ship's battery. I will be replacing an automotive 230 CCA.
What battery are some of you using? What model, CCA etc...
I am leaning toward a Odyssey PC680.
I want to add certain electronics and running lights to my system.
Any advice and/or experience would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
John

If your battery is on the floor behind the pilot, it’s on the cg and bigger won’t matter. If your battery is in the nose, a bigger battery will require a new weight and balance so you won’t crash on your head. If you’re a skinny light pilot, the battery is often moved up front instead of lead weights. Oh, and the Odyssey battery is an excellent choice for longevity, but a bit pricey. We use ones from Interstate Battery for about half the price.

Hi John
The cca is not important. Use a gel cell battery so that it will not leak acid. 16 ah bat is fine. You won't be able run more electronics since you are limited to what your engine can produce. The Odyssey battery's are heavy! Lots of lead to give you more storage and cranking power than you need.
Do you have the v tail one?
Use led landing, running and strobe lights and you will have plenty of power. I would recommend an HKS engine if you really want to fly at night. Way more reliable!
Happy flying

Hi Mark,
My ship has the standard tail section. Funny… lots of people ask me the same thing as you did (hmmmmm)
I have the Rotax 582 (Silver Head).
I was going digital with all lights… thanks for the input on the battery… like minds travel in small circles J

Hi,
Yeppers… mine is on the deck just under the forward part of the rear seat.
Do you think a PC 680 is about the right size for a 582?
With the Interstate battery… do you still have to use the special charger like has to be used on the Odyssey batteries?
Thanks,
John

No, just a standard charger or float charger is fine.

Hi Guys,
Well... I ordered a PC680, 25amp charger/conditioner, and assorted terminals from Amazon. All arrived in most excellent time via ground in just 2-3 days. Amazon had the best price by far on everything. And, I priced out at many other suppliers before ordering. I will be installing it on Saturday. I'll post the after purchase results of the new battery performance ASAP.
Best Regards,
John
