I did keep your comments in mind while deciding what to do about the antenna location. The clincher for my present choice was the photos of all the other Earthstars I found (with the standard location on the metal wrap around piece at the top of the windshield). My ground wire goes from one of the antenna mounting bolts to a new hole & bolt on a metal piece that is definitely grounded to a airframe bolt. I checked the continuity with a ohm meter from the same antenna bolt to the metal skin of the wing (out as far as I could reach). There is an antenna guy in our EAA Chapter that has some test equipment, so I will be calling him to have a look at my setup. I'll keep you informed.
