Hi Mark
Now that is interesting to hear. I thought my meter was wacky but everytime I checked it said the same thing. I do have the (I assume) factory bulkhead with foam and material blocking the back compartment.
Before I did the metering I would have guessed most of the noise was coming from the back and from the wing overhead.
My next test will be with the mic behind the back bulkhead. Wonder how high that will be.
Thanks
Fred

Well Guys I think we are going to get someplace with sound deadening if we all share our ideas.
If you are really interested in sound deadening go to this site and listen to what this guy says and play the video demonstrations.
http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com
I think he has the best ideas yet that I have found in my research on the net.
Including what sounds crazey for an airplane"foam-lead-foam sandwich" The lead seems super thin and maybe that is what should be
used under the engine firewall and up the back of the wing to block all direct noise from the engine. Aparently almost nothing will go through lead sheet. Well you read it for yourself.
What do you think?
Fred

Thanks Gary
That is good to know. I will do some experimenting with the stuff.

Hi Fred
the noise sours is from the back, but it is being reflected and sent back
in a manner that is not good for your ears. The rear wall needs to be
sealed, no holes at all. The propellor has a low pressure bubble that travels on
the forward surface of the blade and that bubble hits the side of the plane
like a drum, glue insulation or carpet to the inside of the shell if you
have a fiberglass shell or the fabric if you have an older model J. This is
like gluing a carpet to the inside of a drum and than hitting it with and
drum stick, not much noise.
Happy Flying
Mark

Good idea
I will have to try that also.
Thanks

Hi Gary
What kind of carpet are you using? I suppose it would have to be very light in weight. I have seen some Titans with a nice light weight looking grey carpet and always wondered what it is called. Is it some kind automotive trunk carpet ? It looks to be about a 1/8th of an inch thick.
Thanks
Fred

Light weight boat carpet is what we use.
Happy Flying

odyssey I added very light weight .25 inch aluminum padding. This is spray
glued to the back side, floor and top area in the back section of the
fuselage. The padding has air pockets the same as bubble wrap. To separate the
back compartment from the front I have 1 inch sound deadening panel wrapped
in white vinyl (see my picture of this in the photo section under Gary's
Odyssey). The panels wedge into position and hold with Velcro. The right side
panel pulls out to allow access to the baggage area. Above my head on the
wing I spray glued .25 inch foam fabric, and the floor has spray glued
carpet. I know it's quiet because people who go up with me tell me so. The new
buyer of the plane likes to go up with me without using the headsets, and we
can talk to each other just fine, though I still like the headsets.

floor in front of the pilots seat. When I aimed it at the side windows it was
very much lower on the scale. I pointed it back as far as I could reach and
the noise level was higher than the side screens but lower than the front
of the plane.

for 10 bucks I think. Check out their web site.

Fred,

Ozite is a light weight carpet sold in small rolls but large enough for our planes. This can be found at local walmart or pep boys, places like these.
Automotiveinteriors.com Also has a variety of carpeting that will work good for noise suppression if glued to your floor, it is heavier but more durable.
The boat carpeting that Mark recommends should be good too, maybe check at a marina.

I got some nice lightweight marine carpet that looks like stock Thunder Gull, from Cabelas. They will send you samples if you call and ask.
