Or an internal combustion engine acting as a generator just to run an electric motor. Like in the Mitsubishi Outlander P-HEV.
P.S. Ours is ironsand - black:(

direct hybrid with one engine and two electric motors; can't even wonder what the propellor transmission shaft assembly would look like:)
would be nice to imagine a serial hybrid with a controller mode to stream electrons directly to a motor
(off topic; are there sand grains of Pounamu greenstone too? got a friend in Hawaii at observatories, collecting teaspoons of sand for a scientist friend at sandgrains.com
http://sandgrains.com; 17 US sites, 1 Gobi desert, 1 Thar desert so far)

Yes; now i got to figure out the mechanical clutch and declutch of a series parallel power plant; wish just a polarized electrical valve could route them electrons
P.S. it's rare earth magnetite, even Hawaii has a few beaches like that; Just a teaspoon will be enough..

Mark....a practical question. If you converted an existing Odyseey to an Electric Odyssey now in 2014. With a 26 foot wing...
-1-
What is the approximate aggregate cost estimate for your best choice for readily available engine and batteries and accessories? What is the engine and battery you would choose for this application?
-2-
What is the estimated flight time one could expect in this configuration while not exceeding a 1250# MTOW?
Thanks

Hi
There are several choices of motors for the Odyssey. This is a new posibility. It's just a prototype right now but might become a viable alternative.
Zero makes a 50 kW motor that is 67 hp.
Happy Flying,
Mark

And don’t forget the new Harley electric motor at 74hp, if you could get one without the motorcycle.

Mark, did thou consider the Enerdel battery? recharges in ten minutes; Proterra, a hybrid electric bus also uses it
Lithium titanate cathode battery designed by Altairnano; there's one rated for 25,000 cycles!

Gentlemen....a bit of patience please. I know this is a hot and exciting topic.
Please.....let Mark respond to my questions and then add your well considered thoughts.
BTW - Enerdel is a graduate of US bankruptcy proceedings and subsequent to restructuring, just in July 2013, laid off nearly half of its production and management due to lack of customer orders. Note - an Odyssey is an aircraft and not a city bus or a Tesla car that can carry 1,000+ pounds of batteries and a cooling system.
The Electric Harley is a pure prototype, unavailable for purchase in any form, as already discussed in this forum.
My question was about here and now - which is the critical zone where Mark is actually working with our Earthstar aircraft.
Thanks again for your paitience. Let Mark reply, please.
Then we can pick up the discussion as needed.
Thanks

Macroaxis lists Altairnano with an 82% probability of bankruptcy.

please, macroaxis is an early stage startup commenting on a 40yr old firm's future, with an algorithm. even Sony is at 72%, firms that have out ridden many slowdowns; unusual, in an apparent battery glut, they still seem expensive; anyhow let Mark speak

Sorry to clarify ... BUT your facts are just wrong. Your criticism is simply a corporate form of ad-hominem argument. This is where I have difficulty when inaccurate and unhelpful information gets promoted as fact and seems to be without any supportive research. The internet just becomes just a place where anything can be said whether there is genuine merit or not. Surely we can hold a higher standard here.
Altairnano was formed in 1996...NOT 40 years ago. Both the CEO and CFO resigned early this year.
"ALTI" stopped posting their annual financial reports on their investor web page in 2011. Were recently sent a "Non-Compliance" letter from Nasdaq for not filing timely 10Q quarterly financial reports. Moving all production to Mainland China. Only good news is debt... a $130,000,000 loan to keep afloat.
Sony's financial and product development woes are well known. No profitable year since 2008, and forecasting a $500,000,000 loss for 2014/15. Total revenue down by nearly 30% since 2008.
Let us be duly cautious and well considered in our recommendations and comments.

The idea of charging in ~10 minutes with "lithium titanate" batteries is a decade old; many others doing it, here's Toshiba, figures in Mitsubishi iMiEV and Honda scooters too

(just felt an underdog being jumped upon there, Altairnano was the first firm that came up in search as an established firm in business)
