The ultralight version is reliable on a 50 hp 503. You had it on an 80 hp Hirth. My experience with in-flight adjustable (current, more robust model) was that it was hard to get just the right setting. I took it off and went back to ground-adjustable and was happy with that. Looking back, I think the perfect solution would be setting up the in-flight unit so that it was simply a two-position prop - max climb pitch and cruise pitch. Then you could toggle the switch four seconds either way and have it right. I think that would take an added washer and maybe even some machining of washers to get exactly the right dimension between coarse and fine. It was after trying to find a proper pitch in constant turbulence over the desert one spring day, without success, that caused me to remove it.

I'm nervous about the reliability. I had a ultralight version and had nothing but problems. The thread was fragile but also motor moved in its casing and that caused the wires to break every 10 or 20 hours.
For now, not for me. I'd rather have 90% full power 100 percent of the time than 100% full power whenever the prop works.
Sounds like your experience is different.

Also, since they twist the tip of the prop and therefore don't change the angle of attack throughout the blade they aren't as efficient. I figure a good fixed pitch will generally equal a IVO adjustable and be much more reliable.

an overdrive. Finer for climb, two taps of the switch for fast cruise. My hangar
partner just installed the bigger Ivo on his 912 powered Titan, and we’re still
getting the brushes bracket fabricated. Should be interesting.

Would any of you find this useful and interesting? I'd love to get more people aware of Mark Beierle's wonderful airplanes.
