left aileron light corrosion

Post by zadwit »

my left aileron had light corrosion and very heavy corrosion on the actuator bell crank arm riveted to the end rib of the aileron. Turns out the reason for all this is there were NO drain holes put in the fabric after installation.
I removed the aileron and fabric was shot anyway, not enough silver on it, made a new bell crank arm (horn) and removed the corrosion and put a light primer coat on and not it is ready for new fabric.

That is a lot of corrosion. It looks like it has been sitting outside for a long time. For your safety you need to do a very thorough inspection including inside the wing checking the spar and wing attach brackets.

It was only this one place. I think the wing was under cover except for the left aileron because all the silver had faded away and the fabric was shot.. guessing water dripped off a roof or something that causes some electrolysis to get this intergrannular going on that aileron horn. The inside of the wing looks shinny and new .

The four attach points are in good shape.

I will inspect the inside of the wing further before I fly it. I was worried at first but after looking in every available inspection hole it all looks good, just that left aileron. And the aileron structure itself just had light corrosion in a few spots. There were NO drain holes in the ailerons…

I concur. I would cut inspection holes in the lower wing and use mirrors, lights, fiber optic tools, whatever to thoroughly check and re-check the structure.

Instead of, or in addition to "recommended check points, be obsessive about looking at things.

I laugh when it comes time to do my annual inspection because I spend lots of time looking at things -all the time. I run a "continuous" annual inspection. I'm not saying that a procedural check should not be done, just that it should be mostly redundant.

Assume nothing.

Hope that my rant helps.

Don£t worry, Im A bit OCD so I look and look and recheck until I drive people nuts.!! I used to be an inspector onB-737s in Alaska I got in lots of arguments because I made production pull floors back up so I could have a second look at repairs that they wanted me to sign off on and guess what, every once in a while, I would find something missed, tools left behind, repairs not installed properly, probably about 30% of the time .

Anyway right now I am working on the fuselage and when I get the wing back in the shop I will remove the tips and make whatever access I need to check the spar caps and webs. So far what can see in the wing is shiny and new looking but I still want to look at itÖ

Yeah that's great. I didn't mean to patronize. I just think we can all remind each other.
