Titan 15 gallon fuel tank

Post by dunceeconometrics »

Has anyone successfully placed a Titan 15 gallon fuel tank in a TGull? JT2? Odyssey?

Hi
For anyone wanting to put 15 gallon tank in a thundergull or gull 2000.
The best fix is to replace the gas guzzling 2 stroake engine with an HKS that burns about 1/2 the gas.
Problem solved and a lasting benefit of economical Flying and vastly improved reliability and really easy starting. Fore just some of the advantages!
I have been flying HKS's for 25 years and 8000 hrs a bit I love it.
And a standees 10 gal tank gives me a total of 4 hrs. Does any one need more? Really?
Extra gas is weight 30 lbs more for an extra 5 gallons that's used 2 hp to keep it aloft.
Happy Flying
Mark

I tend to agree with Mark on this. I have only filled it full once and I ran out of bladder before gas. I don't like carrying around extra weight and extra hazardous flammable material

I purchased my J2 with one installed. It has about 14 gal usable.

Thanks to both Marks. I am planning on getting an HKS. I am just being conservative that my HKS Gallons per hour could be 3.3. That leaves only 2.25 hours to my 45 minute reserve. From my home in MN to the desert southwest, I'd really love to have 325 mile legs. Slowly, I am accepting more stops. Mark D, could you post any pics?
Mark B, Do you have a database of JT2 finished empty weights?

I think 3.3 gal per hour is very conservative. I burn around 2.6 including
climbs. I use 2.8 gal/hour for my calculations. burn < 2.5 in straight and
level flight. I have a HacMan which helps a lot.

Alan, Thank you You have wing tanks don't you? I know Mark is very down on them and I respect him greatly. How has your experience with wing tanks been?

I removed my wing tanks when I got rid of my 2-cycle. I now have the 10
gallon standard tank. Wing tanks are heavy, and they do crack and leak if
you aren't careful. I had one crack because I filled it with a gas can and
the weight of the can when filling the tank cracked it.

Alan do you have indicated airspeeds for your JT2 at 2.5 gph?, @ 2.8 gph? I am hoping for 100 mph ias at the lowest possible gph. Thanks,
John

90 mph at 2.5 gal. I generally don't go higher than that since the engine
nose goes up dramatically. I have my prop pitched for 5600 at full power
climb, 62 mph.
